PU PSC organizes special lecture

Lahore: (Friday, December 26, 2025): Punjab University Pakistan Study Centre (PSC) in collaboration with American Institute of Pakistan Studies (AIPS) organized a lecture on ‘Tradition and Technology: Fatwas in the Computer Age’. On this occasion, Dr Mashal Saif, Associate Professor, Clemson University, USA was the keynote speaker while Director PSC Prof Dr Amjad Abbas Khan, faculty members and PhD, M Phil scholars of the various departments at PU were also present. In his address, Dr Amjad Abbas Khan welcomed the guest speaker and the participants. He said that the event will be fruitful for researchers. Dr Saif argued that recent technological advancements have led to the use of the technology on the practice of fatwa-issuance. She asserted that while the informal fatwa-issuance process that continues to this day is often regarded as the bastion of uncodified context-specific, diverse and flexible Islamic law, the use of technology is inadvertently affecting that diversity and leading to increasing standardization and depersonalization. She also highlighted key changes in the form of fatwas, including shifts in length, the citing of sources, the tone and manner of address, the dulling of specificity, and as a point of standard doctrine.
